Optical Fiber
Optical Fiber is made up mainly of silica compared to the traditional cables which make use of metallic material to send data. Optical Fiber supports both multimode fibers and single mode fibers. Multimode fibers are used for short distances while singlemode fibers are used for long distance. All Optical Fibers have to be terminated with Optical Fiber connectors.
Advantages
Optical Fiber is used mainly in communication and will soon form part of our future. It will without doubt bring a big boast to our communication system.
Since light is involved in the transmission of data, Optical Fiber transmits data at higher rates and over longer distances, and is not affected by electromagnetic interference. Also, the fibers can carry various signals at different wavelengths.
Optical Fiber is also used for lighting purposes such as illuminated signs or decorative applications and for medical applications.
